Nightingale Estate (Hackney) - Sceptre Road (Croxteth)
High Abstraction for the Lower Classes
I have this distant memory of going to see a tower block being demolished when I was a kid, I think it was in Croxteth, Liverpool. I remember it being this spectacle that was too big and powerful to comprehend - an absolute visual euphoria that has always stuck with me. Using this image as a starting point I have been collating footage of this demolition and have expanded that out to getting as many clips of council tower blocks being demolished through the Housing Action Trust Scheme (HAT).
HAT was a scheme set up in the wake of 1988 Right to Buy initiative and played a major role in the demise of social and public housing stock leading to a situation of rampant private ownership and hugely overvalued houses in the UK. The scheme was focused on Hull, Liverpool, London (Harelsden, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest) and Birmingham (Castle Vale).
