Foyer
FOYER is an ongoing body of photographs and writing made alongside my work as a property inspector in London. Since 2017, I have moved through rented homes recording condition, damage, wear, structural integrity and the evidence of everyday life. The job requires me to look closely, then turn a home or building into a document.
With a 35mm camera I photograph something less useful. Flowers beneath a staircase. Dining chairs boxed. Two beds separated by a child-sized armchair. Glasses arranged inside a cabinet. Occupants are absent, but it is difficult not to see them. The images are not portraits of occupants; identifying information is withheld. I am interested in the small decisions through which property becomes inhabited and presented: what is displayed, improvised, protected, concealed or left behind.
