In The NW It Rains And It Rains And It Rains
A photographic work comprising twelve images made from layered “offcuts” of found footage relating to the North West of England, combined with Smith’s own photographs. The source images are printed onto film and overlaid in two layers, held in place between glass.
Each work carries the atmosphere of a particular period in the region during Smith’s upbringing. The film is formatted in a 4:3 ratio, while the glass is 16:9, so the past is literally framed by the present. The resulting images register memory as fragmentary and brittle, while also touching on broader political and celebratory narratives embedded in the region.
Date: 2020
Medium: Film between glass on ply shelves, backlit.
Scale: 320cm x 12cm & 160cm x 12cm
