Made during a residency at Gildengate, OUTPOST Studios, Norwich—while the studio buildings faced the threat of demolition—Paperwork uses fog as both subject and material. Smith records the fog inside the building and projects the documentation back into the same space through a purpose-built screen.
In the process, the work repeatedly triggers the site’s fire alarms. What begins as atmosphere becomes disturbance; what looks delicate becomes treated as danger. The piece sits inside this tension: the fear of the ephemeral, and the infrastructures designed to manage risk. Its title points to the bureaucratic logic beneath these systems—regulation, liability, and blame.
